By default Office 2007 will save documents in new Office XML format which is completely different than binary format used in prior Office releases. There are two options that enable Office 2003 applications to open documents created in Office 2007. First is to choose old format when saving a document in Office 2007 application. The second is to obtain and install Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. That will enable old Office 2003 applications to open documents saved in new Office XML format and is a preferable way to interop between old and new Office versions.
